Pupil Services and Registration

The Levittown Public Schools Department of Pupil Services provides a variety of services for the students of the district:

Centralized Registration

English as a Second Language
English Language Learners are provided with additional instructional support in our ESL program. ESL is offered at Abbey Lane, Northside, and Summit Lane Elementary Schools, Salk Middle School and MacArthur High School. Students continue to receive services until they test proficient on the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test.

Guidance Services
The Levittown School District employs full-time guidance counselors in all four secondary buildings. The role of the counselor includes course planning, career counseling, college selection and applications, programming and scheduling. The counselor serves as a critical member of each building's pupil services team. It is the counselors who assist our students with the critical choices they face as emerging adults. The guidance departments maintain an open communication with parents through individual meetings, workshops, newsletter, as well as the Guidance Portfolio, a important reference tool for all parents of high school students.

Section 504
Section 504 is a federal law designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive Federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education (ED). Section 504 provides: "No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States . . . shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance . . . ."

The Section 504 regulations require a school district to provide a "free appropriate public education" (FAPE) to each qualified student with a disability who is in the school district's jurisdiction, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability. Under Section 504, FAPE consists of the provision of regular or special education and related aids and services designed to meet the student's individual educational needs as adequately as the needs of nondisabled students are met.

At the elementary and secondary school level, determining whether a child is a qualified disabled student under Section 504 begins with the evaluation process. Parents of students who have a disability but do not qualify for special education services under IDEA can request a Section 504 hearing by contacting the Section 504 coordinator in their child's school.
